Code of Conduct — OpenCommit#

Effective Date: 2026-01-31
Last Updated: 2026-03-25

1. Purpose#

OpenCommit exists to support open source development and responsible software collaboration. This Code of Conduct defines the standards of behavior expected from all users of the OpenCommit platform (the “Service”).

Our goal is to foster a stable, inclusive, professional, and non-abusive environment for developers, organizations, and contributors.

This Code of Conduct applies to:

  • All users of the OpenCommit platform
  • All public and private repositories hosted on the Service
  • Issues, pull/merge requests, comments, profiles, and other user-generated content
  • Communications that take place through the platform

Violation of this Code may result in enforcement actions as described below.

2. Expected Behavior#

All users are expected to:

  • Act professionally and respectfully.
  • Communicate constructively, even in disagreement.
  • Respect differing viewpoints and levels of experience.
  • Focus discussions on technical and project-related matters.
  • Use the Service in good faith.

We encourage a culture of:

  • Collaboration
  • Merit-based contribution
  • Inclusion across backgrounds and identities
  • Calm, technical dispute resolution

3. Prohibited Conduct#

The following behaviors are not permitted on OpenCommit:

3.1 Harassment and Abuse#

  • Personal attacks, insults, or derogatory language
  • Threats or intimidation
  • Stalking or repeated unwanted contact
  • Public shaming or humiliation

3.2 Discrimination and Hate Speech#

  • Promotion of extremist or violent ideologies

3.3 Illegal Content or Conduct#

  • Hosting or distributing illegal material
  • Credible threats of violence
  • Content that violates applicable Dutch or EU law

3.4 Platform Abuse#

  • Deliberate disruption of discussions
  • Spam or automated abuse
  • Resource abuse (e.g., misuse of CI/CD for non-development purposes)
  • Impersonation of other individuals or organizations
  • Circumventing account restrictions or bans

3.5 Intellectual Property Violations#

  • Knowingly hosting content that infringes third-party rights
  • Ignoring legitimate takedown requests

4. Professional Standards#

OpenCommit is a software development platform. While free expression is valued, the Service is not intended for:

  • Using the Service as a venue for partisan campaigning or ideological advocacy that is unrelated to the advancement of software, digital rights, or project governance.
  • Ideological disputes unrelated to project governance
  • Content primarily designed to provoke or inflame

Project maintainers may enforce stricter standards within their own repositories, provided those standards do not violate this Code.

Project maintainers are encouraged to moderate their own repositories in the first instance. OpenCommit will typically only intervene if a maintainer is unresponsive or if the conduct violates the global standards set out here.

5. Reporting Violations#

If you experience or witness conduct that violates this Code, you may report it to:

abuse@opencommit.eu or use the report abuse option on a user’s profile page.

Reports should include:

  • A description of the incident
  • Relevant URLs or screenshots
  • Usernames involved
  • Dates and times (if applicable)

We will treat reports confidentially to the extent reasonably possible.

False or malicious reports may themselves constitute a violation.

6. Enforcement Principles#

OpenCommit will enforce this Code based on:

  • Proportionality
  • Reasonableness
  • Good faith
  • Protection of the platform’s integrity

We reserve discretion in determining whether conduct violates this Code.

7. Enforcement Measures#

If a violation occurs, OpenCommit may take one or more of the following actions:

  • Informal warning
  • Formal written warning
  • Temporary content removal
  • Temporary repository suspension
  • Temporary account suspension
  • Permanent account termination
  • Permanent removal of hosted content

In serious cases (e.g., credible threats, illegal material), immediate suspension may occur without prior notice.

Where feasible, users will be informed of the reason for enforcement and may be given an opportunity to respond.

Note: While OpenCommit can remove content from its own platform, we cannot remove data from local clones or forks hosted outside of the Service.

8. Appeals#

If you believe enforcement action was taken in error, you may submit an appeal to:

abuse@opencommit.eu

Appeals should include:

  • Your username
  • The action taken
  • Why you believe the decision was incorrect

OpenCommit will review appeals in good faith. Decisions after appeal are final.

9. Relationship with the Terms of Service#

This Code of Conduct forms part of the acceptable use framework of OpenCommit.

Violation of this Code may constitute a breach of the Terms of Service and may lead to account suspension or termination under those Terms.

10. Amendments#

OpenCommit may update this Code of Conduct from time to time. Continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance of the updated version.
